Discover Your Laser Eye Surgery Eligibility

Laser eye surgery can allow you to live a life free from glasses or contact lenses—but not everyone is eligible. SMILE, PRESBYOND, PRK, REFRACTIVE LENS EXCHANGE, REFRACTIVE CATARACT SURGERY, and LASIK are all effective surgery options, but the eligibility for these surgeries differs.

We offer personalized consultations to help determine if you are a candidate for laser eye surgery. Our team will help you learn about all available choices, providing the information you need to make your decision.

Am I Eligible for Laser Eye Surgery?

Visiting your optometrist before booking a consultation with us can help determine your eligibility. In general, a good candidate for laser eye surgery understands that while surgery can improve their vision, they may still require glasses in certain situations.

Other qualifications include

  • Being at least 18 years old
  • Having a stable eyeglasses prescription for at least 2–3 years
  • No history or findings of active corneal disease
  • No significant medical or eye problems such as autoimmune disease, keratoconus, or glaucoma
  • No significant dry eye
  • Not being pregnant, nursing, or planning to become pregnant in the next 6 months

What to Expect During Your Consultation

Your consultation includes an in-depth explanation of everything related to the laser eye surgery process. We are here to help from the moment you step through our doors.

Please remain out of your contact lenses for one week prior to your appointment. Please bring a copy of your glasses prescription. Expect your appointment to take approximately one hour.

When you arrive at our practice, one of our patient consultants will greet you and begin the necessary paperwork. After completing the initial forms, you will meet with a member of our team.

You can expect a typical laser eye surgery consultation to last between 1–1.5 hours. It’s important to refrain from using contact lenses for at least a week prior to your consultation. Your doctor may place eye drops in your eyes to dilate them, making it easier to view the inner eye.

Think of your consultation as an educational session. You and your doctor will discuss your eligibility for laser eye surgery, and you will learn about available surgeries. We will go over the risks and benefits of each surgery and discuss any nonsurgical treatments available for your needs.

The goal of this consultation is to educate you and discuss what these different surgical options mean for your vision. We can address any questions or concerns you may have about laser eye surgery until you feel comfortable making a final decision.

When you are confident about a final decision on a laser eye surgery option, and you have met the eligibility criteria, we can schedule your surgery. Our team will work with you and your optometrist before and after your procedure.

The Risks of Laser Eye Surgery

Like any medical procedure, laser eye surgery has risks. Intraoperative or postoperative complications can arise. Typically, problems that develop are treatable.

In several PROWL (Patient-Reported Outcomes with LASIK) studies conducted by the FDA, less than 1% of patients experienced difficulty performing their daily activities following LASIK surgery.

Some of the potential risks related to laser eye surgery include:

  • Infection
  • Inflammation
  • Dry eyes
  • Glare
  • Halos
  • Double vision

  • Overcorrection
  • Astigmatism
