Laser Eye Surgery & Vision Correction
Laser eye correction surgery (known as refractive laser surgery and laser vision correction) is a painless, safe, effective and affordable treatment that eliminates the need for, or reduces one's dependence on, glasses or contact lenses.
Laser eye surgery includes two similar procedures, LASIK (Laser Assisted Intrastomal Keratomileusis) and PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy), that improve vision by permanently changing the shape of the cornea (the clear covering of the front of the eye). These procedures are suitable for people who have nearsightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism.
The VISX STAR S4TM
Horizon Laser Vision Center, with state-of-the-art facilities in Saskatoon and Regina, performs these laser eye surgery procedures using the safest, most advanced and innovative technology, the VISX Star S4TM Excimer Laser System. Excimer lasers are cool concentrated beams of ultraviolet light that safely, painlessly evaporate microscopic layers of the cornea leaving the underlying tissue virtually untouched. The VISX Star S4TM Excimer Laser System, which has been used to successfully treat more than 5 million eyes globally, facilitates computer-assisted surgeon-controlled surgery to truly personalize visual needs. It provides 25 times more precise measurements than other technologies. 95% of patients recover 20/25 vision after just one treatment.
These procedures, lasting approximately 20-40 minutes, are performed on an outpatient basis. In most cases, vision stabilizes within a few weeks of the procedure. The procedures require attentive preparation (LASIK and PRK) and post-operative care (LASIK Recovery and PRK Recovery), which are discussed at the time candidacy (LASIK and PRK) for laser eye surgery is evaluated. As with any surgery, there are associated risks (LASIK and PRK), but these are minimal, and are usually outweighed by the benefits of improved vision and reduced dependence on glasses or contacts.
If you are interested in correcting your vision with LASIK or PRK, consult your optometrist for an eye exam to determine if one of these procedures is appropriate for your particular eye health condition. Our skilled laser eye surgeons (Regina and Saskatoon) work closely with your optometrist to ensure comprehensive pre- and post-operative care.
